Teaching
In the fall of 2007, I had the opportunity to teach the class "Public Libraries" at UBC's School of Library, Archival and Information Studies. This was an invigorating experience, as 30 students and I met once a week to debate the ways public libraries provide service. The class blog shows a lively spirit and good understanding of the issues. It was gratifying to see how poised, thoughtful, and creative the next group of library school graduates are.

In a number of my jobs I have taught library skills and information literacy. As a student librarian at the University of British Columbia, I worked on a faculty instruction campaign aimed at helping resistant professors learn to trust databases (the year was 1998). At the New York Public Library I taught members of the public several times a month in classes including basic computer skills, using the library's web site and catalogue, and basic and advanced database and web searching. I also conducted several professional development seminars for colleagues, and developed new material such as a course on using web sources to verify quotations.
